RAND Experts Available to Discuss 1st Anniversary of Haiti Earthquake
January 12 marks the one-year anniversary of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, killing nearly 230,000 people and injuring more than 300,000. The latest issue of RAND Review, the RAND Corporation's flagship magazine, has a special focus on Haiti, and several RAND experts are available to discuss recovery efforts a year after the disaster.
Among the topics they can address:
- How well are the Haitian recovery and reconstruction progressing? What are the obstacles?
- What steps can the U.S. Government and other international donors take to ensure promised aid continues to be delivered and is used effectively?
- What are the main priorities for reconstruction? How can Haiti not just rebuild, but advance?
- How does the Haitian recovery process compare to what other countries have experienced after disasters?
- How can Haiti become better prepared for future calamities?
Keith Crane is the director of the Environment, Energy, and Economic Development program at the RAND Corporation, and can discuss the post-earthquake Haitian economy.
Laurel E. Miller is a senior political scientist with RAND, and can address issues surrounding the continuing process of reconstruction in Haiti.
Crane and Miller were the co-authors of "Building a More Resilient Haitian State," a RAND study which looks at how Haiti's future prosperity and peace can be best secured by Haiti working to become a more resilient state capable of providing public services, such as education and health care, as well as responding effectively to natural disasters.
Melinda Moore is a senior natural scientist at RAND and can discuss cholera outbreaks similar to the one in Haiti, and effective control measures.
