Nuclear Energy After Fukushima to Be Topic of Presentation at the RAND Corporation

WHAT:

For decades now, spent nuclear fuel has been piling up at nuclear reactors in the United States in the absence of a centralized storage facility or geologic repository, and the aftermath of Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster last year has underscored the ongoing significance of this unresolved policy issue.

Spent nuclear fuel in the United States is stored in pools and in dry casks, which has raised questions about whether aging U.S. nuclear power plants are as safe and secure, or as impervious to disaster, as had been believed.

Tom LaTourrette will discuss the pros and cons of nuclear energy in a post-Fukushima world and shed some light on lessons learned over the past year.
