RAND Expert on Presidential Elections in Egypt
RAND Middle East policy researcher Jeffrey Martini has been on assignment in Egypt conducting extensive research on the presidential election. Among the topics Martini can discuss:
- How will the disqualification of 10 presidential candidates—including three leading contenders—further unsettle the Egyptian presidential race and threaten the credibility of the vote?
- The Egyptian military has suggested that the drafting of a new constitution be completed before the election. How might this potential delay in the handover of authority affect Egypt's stability?
- Does the Muslim Brotherhood's decision to field a candidate in the race risk the possibility of a return to single-party rule in Egypt?
- How divisive will the Muslim Brotherhood's decision to field a candidate be within its own ranks? Could that lead to further splits within the organization?
Jeffrey Martini is a Middle East research project associate whose assignment in Egypt has included meetings with the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafists, among others.
